We are all done with spelling (dictée) for the year!  Way to go, grade one! The focus is now on reading as much as possible at home and to read to me as often as possible, in class.

In our classroom, I have posted a chart that shows the students' reading progress.  They each have a frog that jumps a lily pad for each book that the they read; I have seen an impressive growth in reading fluency and comprehension and hope that you have too!

The students were reminiscing the other day about, "way back when I was a baby...".  I thought it would be fun to have the students share a favourite item from their baby days in a "show and tell" situation.  I will pick a student each day to be the show and tell person the following day.  Dig out those baby items (but please keep the most sentimental at home!).

Thanks,

Becky

There will not be a spelling dictée quiz this week (some students were very disappointed - sorry...!).  The emphasis will now be on getting the students to read each night and to read to me as often as possible.  The progress has been remarkable and I encourage them to keep it up!

This week at school:
Thursday @ 1:10 - Spotlight Assembly
Friday @ 11:00 - Talent show in the gym
                 12:00 - Noon dismissal

No school on Monday, May 20 (Victoria Day)

Have a great week!

Welcome to summer!  What great weather we have been having, let's hope it stays for a while!

In class, we have been talking about Space (espace) and learning about life on the International Space Station.  We learned how Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield eats, sleeps, cooks food, uses the bathroom and trims his fingernails in space!  We even tasted some freeze-dried ice cream (not bad but the cold stuff can`t be beat!).

The sound of the week is 'tion', and the words are:
1. récréation (recess)
2. addition (addition)
3. éducation (education)
4. collation  (snack)

Good luck with these four words!  If you wanted to practice one of the bonus words, it will be
aujourd' hui , meaning, today,

With the new reading books that are coming home, I encourage the students to  practice reading the book at home and then bring it back to me when they are confident reading it and understand what it is about.  Once they show a good understanding of the book, they can choose a new book to take home to practice reading.
Any questions, please stop by the class or call me at school (-4447).

Have a great week!
